Stanzia Pellizzetti

Stanzia Pellizzetti

Istrian peninsula - Croatia

Nobody knew about this antic Roman Villa in Stanzia Pellizzetti until the latest works on the Istrian Ypsilon motorway which uncovered it in 2005. and 2006. However, in order to complete the motorway they had to completely destroy a part of the antic Villa. Here we talk about a Roman Villa built around 1st Century BC, traces of life were found up to the 6th century. Later it was an integral part of the Pula city defense line against intrusions of Slavic and Avar tribes.

The building of the Villa was made in 3 phases, in first it was built like a smaller household with a big water cistern and few smaller buildings. South of the water-tank we found small sized “Terme”. Beside this big there were other 2 smaller water-tanks. In the 2nd Century the Villa was enlarged.

Inside the household we found an olives mill and a separated room for the produced oil. The residential part was ornated by mosaics and fresks. During the excavations parts of the mosaics were found as well as olive oil containers, glass, iron and ceramic materials.

The household was property of the senator’s family of Settidi.
