Stara Kapela

Eco-ethno village Stara Kapela

The small slavonic village of Stara Kapela is situated on the slopes of the Požega mount. The road ends up in the village and the cell phones here have no signal. But if you might need a telephone there are phone booths and ground lines. The valley has been proclaimed as a touristic area and it has plenty of water springs (9 bigger springs).

The village itself has a long tradition and the historical roots reaches in the far year 1275. when here existed a fort «Grad Potok» - (Spring town) owned by the Gorjan nobility. It has developed around the fort and scattered on the surrounding hills...
In the 15th and the 16th century there was a Turks breach and most of the population was taken to slavery.

In the second half of the 17th century with the rebellion of Rev. Luka Ibrišimović the Turks were expelled but still with occasional intrusions and in the 1758. they destroyed the Chapel of Saint Marc, while the actual Chapel of The Holy Ascension was built in the 1760. the village gets it's actual shape and lowers in the valley by the order of the Emperoress Maria Theresa.
At that age the village was part of the «vojna krajina» - military frontier at the border toward the Turks.

Driven by love for our native land and the place where our ancestors were born, we decided to revive the Stara Kapela (Old Chapel) and on one different, specific basis through the project of the eco-ethno village, transforming the village itself in an interesting touristic destination as a (village-hotel), respectful of the traditional Slavonian architecture, cultural values, traditions etc...

Bike-hiking Path The Association of the Eco-ethno village Stara Kapela has arranged a bike-hiking path which passes among the hills around the village for 13km in lenght. The 6 resting points are allocated correctly with massive oak tables and benches and on 4 of which replicas of turkish belvederes (čardak) are built. From the times of the military frontier and they serve as panoramic view points. The valley and the village as well as the wide surroundings are visible from the Čardak.
Every resting point has got it's own name, given to it by the villagers upon one of the inhabitants or upon a happening that took place on that spot, so one of the resting point is called «The hill of the drunk Maria», The granny Eve's Clearing» and so on...

For those recreatives to which the path seems too long, if they don't have time or strenght to pass the whole way, a few cross over paths has been arranged by which to come down to the village instead of going the whole road. The path passes through pleasant landscape with various plants species, signed with plates with croatian and latin names, and on some resting points there are panels with pictures and names of the birds residing in the area, pictures of edible and non-edible mushrooms which could be found here, the present wildlife inhabitating the area or just passing through it.
In this way the bike-hiking path is not only intended for sports and recreation but it's also educational and offers a photo safari to photography lovers.
